PUBLICATION ETHICS

El-'Adl: Islamic Economic Law Review

El-'Adl: Islamic Economic Law Review is committed to maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity, scholarly quality, transparency, and ethical conduct throughout the publication process. This Publication Ethics statement defines the ethical responsibilities of editors, reviewers, authors, and the publisher in ensuring responsible scholarly publication.

As a peer-reviewed academic journal in the field of Islamic Economic Law, El-'Adl promotes original and responsible scholarship relating to Islamic economic law, contemporary fiqh al-mu'amalat, Sharia contracts, maqasid al-Shariah, Islamic banking and finance, Islamic financial technology, Sharia governance, consumer protection, dispute resolution, fatwas, legislation, judicial practice, and related fields.

The journal applies a double-blind peer-review process. Ethical standards therefore apply to all parties involved in manuscript submission, review, editorial decision-making, publication, and post-publication processes.

1. Responsibilities of Editors

Editorial Independence and Fairness

Editors evaluate manuscripts based on academic merit, originality, relevance to the journal's focus and scope, methodological quality, clarity of argument, and scholarly contribution. Editorial decisions shall not be influenced by the author's nationality, ethnicity, gender, institutional affiliation, religious background, or other personal characteristics.

Confidentiality

Editors and editorial staff shall maintain the confidentiality of submitted manuscripts. Information concerning a manuscript shall only be disclosed to persons directly involved in the editorial and peer-review process.

Editorial Decisions

The Editor-in-Chief and designated editors are responsible for deciding whether a manuscript should be accepted, revised, or rejected. Decisions are based on academic quality, originality, ethical compliance, relevance to the journal, and reviewers' recommendations.

Conflict of Interest

Editors shall not use unpublished material contained in submitted manuscripts for their personal research or advantage. Editors must withdraw from handling manuscripts where personal, professional, financial, or institutional conflicts of interest may affect editorial impartiality.

2. Responsibilities of Reviewers

Peer reviewers play an essential role in maintaining the scholarly quality and integrity of El-'Adl: Islamic Economic Law Review. Reviewers are expected to:

  • Evaluate manuscripts objectively, fairly, and constructively.
  • Provide clear and academically supported recommendations.
  • Avoid personal criticism of authors.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding manuscripts under review.
  • Identify significant relevant literature that has not been appropriately cited.
  • Inform editors of suspected plagiarism, duplicate publication, or substantial overlap.
  • Decline a review where a conflict of interest exists.
  • Decline a review when the reviewer lacks sufficient expertise to evaluate the manuscript appropriately.

3. Responsibilities of Authors

Originality

Authors must submit original scholarly work. Manuscripts must not contain plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, inappropriate data manipulation, or other forms of academic misconduct.

Accuracy of Research Reporting

Authors must report research methods, legal materials, data, analysis, and findings accurately and transparently. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical scholarly conduct.

Multiple or Simultaneous Submission

Authors shall not submit the same or substantially similar manuscript simultaneously to more than one journal. Manuscripts being considered by El-'Adl must not be under active consideration elsewhere.

Acknowledgment of Sources

Authors must appropriately acknowledge all sources that contribute to the research. Relevant academic literature and primary legal or Islamic sources, including legislation, judicial decisions, fatwas, classical Islamic legal texts, Qur'anic verses, hadith, institutional regulations, and official documents, must be cited accurately when used.

Authorship

Authorship shall be limited to individuals who have made substantial scholarly contributions to the conception, design, execution, analysis, interpretation, or preparation of the manuscript. All listed authors must approve the final version and agree to its submission.

Conflict of Interest and Funding

Authors must disclose financial, professional, institutional, or personal relationships that could influence the research. Funding sources and sponsorship must also be disclosed where applicable.

4. Research Ethics

Research involving human participants, respondents, informants, interviews, surveys, confidential information, or personal data must comply with applicable ethical principles and institutional requirements.

Where required, authors must obtain informed consent, protect participant confidentiality, maintain anonymity, minimize potential risks, and obtain approval or permission from the appropriate ethics committee or institution.

Ethical Principle: Research concerning Islamic economic institutions, financial consumers, business actors, communities, or vulnerable groups must respect dignity, justice, privacy, confidentiality, fairness, and applicable legal and ethical standards.

5. Plagiarism and Similarity Screening

Manuscripts submitted to El-'Adl: Islamic Economic Law Review may be screened using plagiarism-detection or similarity-checking software before publication.

Similarity reports are evaluated substantively rather than solely on the basis of an overall percentage. Editors may examine the source, location, nature, and extent of textual similarity to distinguish legitimate quotation and properly cited material from inappropriate duplication.

Manuscripts containing plagiarism, substantial unattributed copying, data fabrication, falsification, or other serious breaches of academic integrity may be rejected.

6. Data Integrity and Transparency

Authors are responsible for the accuracy and integrity of all data, quotations, legal documents, statistical results, field information, and other evidence presented in their manuscripts.

Fabrication, falsification, selective manipulation, misleading omission, or inappropriate alteration of research data is prohibited. Authors should retain appropriate research records where possible to support verification of their findings.

7. Use of Artificial Intelligence

Generative Artificial Intelligence tools cannot be listed as authors because authorship requires responsibility and accountability for the scholarly content of the manuscript.

Authors who use AI-assisted tools for language editing, grammar checking, translation assistance, idea organization, or similar purposes remain fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, references, arguments, interpretation, and integrity of the final manuscript.

Significant use of generative AI in manuscript preparation should be transparently disclosed in accordance with the journal's editorial policy.

8. Corrections, Retractions, and Expressions of Concern

When significant errors or ethical concerns are identified after publication, the journal may publish a correction, clarification, expression of concern, or retraction according to the nature and seriousness of the problem.

Retraction may be considered when findings are unreliable because of serious error, fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, duplicate publication, unethical research, or another substantial breach of publication ethics.

Minor errors that do not invalidate the principal findings may be addressed through an official correction.

9. Handling Allegations of Misconduct

Allegations of research or publication misconduct will be handled seriously, fairly, confidentially, and proportionately. The editorial team may request explanations, supporting documents, original research data, or clarification from the parties concerned.

Where necessary, the journal may communicate with relevant institutions and take appropriate editorial action to protect the integrity of the scholarly record.

10. Confidentiality of Peer Review

Submitted manuscripts are confidential documents. Reviewers and editors shall not reproduce, distribute, publicly discuss, cite unpublished materials, or use ideas obtained through peer review for personal advantage.

The identities of authors and reviewers shall be protected in accordance with the journal's double-blind peer-review policy.

11. Copyright and Intellectual Property

Authors are responsible for ensuring that materials included in their manuscripts do not unlawfully infringe copyright, intellectual property rights, or other legitimate rights of third parties.

Authors must obtain appropriate permission when reproducing copyrighted tables, figures, images, research instruments, extensive quotations, or other protected materials where permission is legally required.

12. Ethics in Islamic Economic Law Scholarship

As a journal specializing in Islamic Economic Law, El-'Adl requires scholars to treat Islamic legal sources, classical legal scholarship, contemporary fatwas, national legislation, court decisions, and regulatory materials accurately, responsibly, and contextually.

Quotations from the Qur'an, hadith, classical Islamic legal literature, fatwas, legislation, judicial decisions, and other authoritative sources must be presented accurately and referenced to reliable sources.

Scholarly Integrity: Differences among schools of Islamic jurisprudence, scholarly interpretations, fatwa authorities, and regulatory approaches should be represented fairly and academically without misrepresentation of competing positions.

13. Publisher Responsibilities

The publisher supports the editorial independence of El-'Adl: Islamic Economic Law Review and is committed to maintaining the integrity, accessibility, continuity, and scholarly quality of the journal.

Institutional, commercial, financial, or other interests shall not improperly influence editorial decisions.
